Jody Hull was selected in the first round, 18th overall, by the Hartford Whalers in the 1987 NHL Entry Draft. A member of Canada's gold medal World Junior team in 1988, Hull played three years of junior hockey with the Peterborough Pets of the OHL, scoring 50 goals and 94 points in 64 games during his final year.

Hull's professional career began in 1988-89, when he played in 60 games for the Whalers, scoring 16 goals and 34 points. In 1989-90, he spent most of the season in the AHL but did get called up for 38 games. In 1990-91, Hull joined the New York Rangers but scored just five goals and 13 points in 47 games.

The expansion Ottawa Senators obtained Hull in 1992-93, and in 69 games he scored 13 goals and 34 assists. By 1993-94, Hull was a member of the Florida Panthers, where he played for almost five years. The highlight of his time in Florida was helping the Panthers advance to the Stanley Cup finals in 1996, where they lost to the Colorado Avalanche.

Following a short stint with Tampa Bay in 1997, Hull was sent to the Philadelphia Flyers where he continued to play on a full-time basis through the 2000-01 season before returning to the Ottawa lineup in 2001-02 while surpassing the 800-games played during the 2002-03 season.
